“The key to winning is fundamentals.”

Earl Weaver

The purpose of this article is to help you develop your own winning philosophy.

Philosophy is a clear, organized template of your vision, core values, and system for success. It is what you stand for as a human being, a leader, and a relentless competitor.

For most of my coaching career, I’ve operated by a simple, 5-point philosophy:

  • Keep winning and losing in perspective.
  • Lead by example.
  • Value character as well as ability.
  • Go for respect over popularity.
  • Work hard and enjoy what you do.

These core values serve as light posts on my mission to maximize potential and help others write history.

Develop Your Blueprint

There are three basic steps you can take today to create your very own personal success formula:

#1: Define it.

If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. What are you willing to fight for?

#2: Refine it.

Helen Keller said, “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt in the heart.” Why does your philosophy matter?

#3: Explain it.

Anything is possible when a team is united around a common purpose. How will you articulate your message?

Now you have a philosophy to put into practice.
