For 25+ years, leading by example has been one of my five coaching principles:
- Keep winning and losing in perspective.
- Lead by example.
- Value character as well as ability.
- Go for results over popularity.
- Work hard and enjoy what you do.
Recently on my Coffee with Coaches podcast, head coach and author Rod Ray said:
“If I’m a stronger person, then I can be a stronger person for other people.”
It reminded of me The Law of the Lid, which states:
Leadership ability is the lid that determines a person’s level of effectiveness. The lower an individual’s ability to lead, the lower the lid on his potential. The higher the individual’s ability to lead, the higher the lid on his potential. (John Maxwell)
Ultimately, you can’t give what you don’t have.
This is why the best leaders across industries are lifelong learners and committed to personal development.
In what ways can you raise the bar on your growth and performance today?
